Augusto C. Tomé's research focuses on developing innovative photosensitizing agents, chemosensors, and photocatalytic materials with significant implications for medicine, environmental sustainability, and microbial control. The study of cationic thiazolothiazole derivatives and β-amino-substituted porphyrin derivatives has led to the discovery of novel compounds with potent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Additionally, phthalocyanine-based materials have shown promising results in photodynamic inactivation of RNA viruses, pathogenic bacteria, and organic pollutants in wastewaters. The synthesis and characterization of various porphyrin derivatives have also revealed their potential applications as chemosensors for metal ion detection and laser-induced photoactive response.
