Siyu Li has made significant contributions to understanding SARS-CoV-2 assembly through biophysical modeling. Research focused on genome condensation and budding, as well as the effect of charge distribution on packaged RNA length, provides insights into the structural mechanics governing viral replication. Elasticity in curved topographies is also explored, with exact theories and linear approximations developed for curved space-based materials. Additionally, ground states of crystalline caps are investigated using generalized jellium models, while a self-consistent field theory of virus assembly reveals the necessity of scaffolding proteins for large icosahedral viruses.
